Rollers

Can you apply LaRosa limewash paint with a roller?

Simply put, we don’t recommend using a paint roller to apply LaRosa Limewash.

LaRosa Limewash is a true limewash, made without the fillers, binders or chemical thickeners commonly found in conventional and acrylic based faux limewash products. Its naturally milky consistency means it doesn’t distribute evenly with a roller and can result in drips, streaks and uneven coverage.

That’s why we recommend using a natural fibre limewash brush. Our specialised brushes help distribute the paint evenly while creating the natural texture, depth and movement that makes limewash unique. They’re also ideal for textured and uneven surfaces such as stone and roughcast render.

Worried a Brush Will Take Longer?

Not necessarily. Applying limewash with a brush typically takes only around 20% longer than applying conventional paint with a roller. You may also save time by reducing the need to mask edges and remove painter’s tape.

A brush also gives you much greater control over the final appearance, allowing you to create a finish that feels naturally varied and full of character.

Applying LaRosa Prep Coat:

LaRosa Prep Coat can be easily applied with a paint roller, and in most cases, one coat is all you need. This water based product has an ultra low VOC content of less than 1 gram per litre, making it a practical base coat to prepare your surface before applying limewash.

Application Tips

  • Start at the window and work away from the light.
  • To avoid visible lines or a “picture frame” effect showing through the limewash, always work wet on wet, including when cutting in.
  • If you’re painting both the ceiling and walls, paint the ceiling first.
  • To prevent lap marks, blend vertical and horizontal strokes together without adding more paint.

Roller Clean Up

Clean your roller and other tools with water after use.

Pro Tip: If you’re planning to use the roller again within a couple of days, you don’t need to wash it immediately. Wrap it tightly in cling wrap or a similar airtight covering to prevent the paint from drying out.
