Limewash Paint FAQs
My Walls are painted with conventional paint, can I use LaRosa Paint over top?
Yes. You can apply LaRosa Limewash over existing paint, as long as the surface is clean, and free from flaking or peeling paint. We Recommend the wall with 2 coats of a suitable water-based undercoat sealer/primer, followed by 1 coat of LaRosa Prep Coat on interior walls.
- Gloss or semi gloss walls: Lightly sand the surface before priming.
- Different wall materials: Different surfaces may cause slight colour variation. Limewash and Prep Coat will not hide what is underneath, so for a more even finish, use 2 coats of water-based undercoat sealer or primer followed by 1 coat of LaRosa Prep Coat.
- Lining wallpaper: Limewash can be applied over wallpaper as long as 1 coat of LaRosa Prep Coat is applied before limewashing.
Can I use LaRosa Limewash in my bathroom?
Yes. LaRosa Limewash can be used on bathroom walls and ceilings. It is well suited to humid environments. Limewash is breathable, naturally mould-resistant and water-resistant, making it a perfect choice for bathrooms. However, it is not waterproof.
Because limewash is a very absorbent paint, it can pick up marks from products like toothpaste, soap and water. We do not recommend limewash inside showers or directly beside baths for this reason. For areas that are unprotected to regular splashes, such as behind a basin, we recommend having a splashback or other easy to clean surface.
We also do not recommend adding a protective sealer. It can reduce the breathability of the limewash and make touch ups in the future more difficult.
Can I use LaRosa Limewash Paint in my kitchen?
Yes. LaRosa Limewash can be used on kitchen walls and ceilings and is an amazing way to add natural colour and texture to the space.
we do not recommend painting limewash anywhere near areas that are regularly exposed to oil, grease or cooking splashes, such as directly behind a stove, as these can leave marks or discolour the finish because of how absorbent limewash is.
We do not recommend applying a protective topcoat because it can reduce the breathability of the limewash and make future touch ups more difficult.
How do you store LaRosa Limewash?
Store leftover LaRosa Limewash in an airtight container stored at 5°C or above. Keep out of reach of children.
Tip: Before sealing the container, place a layer of cling film directly over the surface of the limewash. This can help prevent the paint from drying out.
After using previously stored limewash again, the limewash may appear thicker than before. If there is a thin layer of water on the surface and the paint mixes easily, it should still be suitable for use.
I am pregnant, is it safe to use LaRosa limewash?
LaRosa Limewash is a low odour, mineral based paint and does not contain VOCs, formaldehyde or added biocides. So, in most cases it is safe to use limewash while pregnant. However, limewash is alkaline while being mixed and applied, so we recommend taking extra care during pregnancy.
If you do choose to paint while pregnant:
- Ensure the room is well ventilated
- Wear gloves and safety glasses
- Avoid inhaling dust when mixing the dry powder
- Follow all safety instructions on the product packaging
