Preparation:
LaRosa Limewash comes ready to use, so there’s no need to add water, liquids or colourants. Simply mix thoroughly before and during application.
Before You Start
- Cover any surfaces you want to protect from paint splatter.
- If you’re using multiple colours, sort and group your buckets by colour.
- If you have multiple buckets of the same colour, keep them grouped together for easy mixing.
- Check that you have enough limewash to complete the entire project.
- Have a couple of clean, empty buckets ready for decanting and combining buckets of the same colour.
Safety:
Mixing limewash can cause some splattering, so protect your eyes while mixing. Limewash can also dry out your skin with prolonged contact. We recommend wearing gloves, or applying a barrier cream if you prefer to work without gloves.
Mixing LaRosa Limewash paint after opening:
Once the limewash is applied to your wall, the lime reacts with carbon dioxide in the air, forming tiny microcrystals and naturally returning to its original limestone state.
Because the pigments are also part of the heavier ingredients, they can settle towards the bottom of the bucket. Thorough mixing is essential to bring everything back together and achieve consistent colour and coverage.
How to Mix Your Limewash
- Open the bucket and mix thoroughly. Use a kitchen whisk or electric mixer to properly combine the settled ingredients. Avoid using a simple stirring stick, as it won’t adequately mix the heavier material from the bottom.
- Decant the mixed limewash into a clean, empty bucket of the same or larger size. Check the bottom of the original bucket to make sure no pigment or heavier material remains.
- Mix again if needed. If material is still stuck to the bottom, add some of the mixed limewash back into the original bucket and continue stirring.
- Repeat the process of mixing and decanting until all of the settled material has been fully incorporated.
Tip: Mixing Long Stored Limewash
If your LaRosa Limewash has been stored for an extended period, we recommend using a bar mixer or electric paint stirrer. This provides a more thorough and efficient mix than a kitchen whisk.
Simply follow the mixing and decanting steps above, taking extra care to ensure all settled pigment and lime are fully incorporated before application.
Why You Shouldn't Work From a Full Bucket?
A full bucket of limewash can be heavy and difficult to handle. If it gets knocked over, it can also create a much bigger mess.
More importantly, working directly from a full bucket means you’ll need to stir the paint more frequently. The heavier ingredients naturally begin settling towards the bottom again, which can affect the consistency of your mix. This may lead to subtle colour variations across your wall as the paint becomes thinner at the start and thicker towards the end.
Our Recommendation
- After thoroughly mixing your LaRosa Limewash, decant it into a smaller working bucket with only a couple of inches (approximately 5 cm) of paint. This allows your brush to reach closer to the bottom and helps maintain more consistent colour.
- Stir your limewash approximately every 2 minutes using your whisk to keep the mix evenly combined.
- Don’t work right down to the last drop. Instead, top up your working bucket regularly after thoroughly mixing the remaining limewash.
Tips and Tricks
When working on larger areas that require multiple buckets of the same colour, mix some limewash from one bucket into the next. This helps blend the colour between buckets and maintain a consistent finish across the entire surface.
Can I Add Water to Limewash?
The liquid in LaRosa Limewash isn’t simply water. It is an alkaline liquid with a high pH level that plays an important role in the paint’s carefully balanced formulation.
If you accidentally leave your limewash uncovered and notice that some of the liquid has evaporated, you can add a maximum of 10% water to replace the lost liquid. Adding more than this can alter the balance of the paint and affect how it performs.
For the best results, avoid adding water unless it is necessary.
